The APA Journalism Foundation board met in Auburn this month to award
grant and internship money from the Foundation endowment.
Eight Alabama newspapers will receive editorial internships this summer.
They are Auburn Villager, Birmingham Business Journal, The Dadeville
Record, The Eclectic Observer, The Islander in Gulf Shores, The Citizen
of East Alabama in Phenix City, The Piedmont Journal and The Tallassee
Tribune.
Each newspaper receives $1,500 for a 10-week newsroom intern.
Grants totaling $35,650 were awarded to seven Alabama colleges, which
included Alabama State University, Auburn University, Samford
University, Snead State Community College, Talladega College, Troy
University and University of Alabama.
This year the grants will go to fund twelve unique journalism projects
at the seven recipient colleges. The University of Alabama is using part
of their funding for a Student Media Writing Center and the Alabama
Scholastic Press Association's activities for high school journalism
students. Snead State Community College is using their grant to update
their school newspaper's design software to take their publication from
a newsletter style to a standard newspaper format. Similarly, Talladega
College will use their grant to start a school newspaper. Other projects
the grant money will go to help are high school journalism workshops,
summer diversity workshops, and Auburn University's Tiger/Cub Reporter
Program.
