Henderson and Walls to be inducted into Alabama Newspaper Hall of Honor

Friday Aug 1, 2008
J.C. Henderson, former editor and owner of The Alexander City Outlook, and Carmage Walls, founder of Southern Newspapers, Inc. will be the 104th and 105th inductees into the Alabama Newspaper Hall of Honor.

Henderson began his career at age 14, setting type by hand at the Gainesville (Ga.) Eagle. He later worked at The Birmingham News before moving to Alexander City, a move he called “one of the best decisions of my life.”

When Henderson purchased The Outlook, it was a weekly newspaper, and he soon expanded it to twice weekly. Today, The Outlook is a six-day daily. Henderson went on to purchase the Opelika Eagle, The Dadeville Record, The Goodwater Enterprise-Chronicle, The Chamber County News, The Chattahoochee Valley Times and the West Point Times.

Henderson wrote a popular column for many years called “The Ole Crier.” The column began when he was in high school and Henderson said he adopted the name crier after reading in a New York magazine about a man calling himself a crier.

Henderson was active in his community. He was a member of the Alexander City Chamber of Commerce, the Lions Club, and was named Man of the Year in 1966, and Lion of the Year for 1985-86. Henderson served as president of the Alabama Press Association in 1949.

Carmage Walls started his career at age 15 in the mailroom at the Orlando Sentinel-Star. He studied accounting by correspondent course and was promoted to bookkeeper at the Sentinel-Star before moving back to his home state of Georgia.

He became general manager and publisher of the Macon (Ga.) Telegraph-News and then moved to Gadsden as president of General Newspapers, Inc.

Walls directed Public Welfare Foundation operations, which included newspapers in Gadsden, Tuscaloosa and Spartanburg, S.C. During this time, he formed Southern Newspapers, and today Walls family members operate newspapers in Alabama, Texas and Georgia. Alabama papers include The Sand Mountain Reporter in Albertville, The Fort Payne Times-Journal, The Daily Sentinel in Scottsboro, The Weekly Post in Rainsville, the Daily Mountain Eagle in Jasper, and The Valley Times-News in Lanett.

The induction ceremony will be held Nov. 8 at Auburn University. Invitations will be sent to all APA members.
