Printing of The Birmingham News and Huntsville Times will shift from Birmingham to Atlanta and Nashville in January.

The parent company of the two newspapers, Alabama Media Group, announced yesterday the conclusion of  an outsourcing exploration process it had made public in July.

The company will wind down its Birmingham production operations and sell the related property.

The Times will be printed by Gannett, parent company of the Nashville Tennessean. The News will be printed by Cox, the company that owns the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

The announcement said that Alabama Media Group has determined it can reduce production costs while ensuring quality and delivery standards are still met. The company said that while it regrets the related loss of 89 production jobs in Birmingham (many part time), it is in the best interests of the company and its clients to reduce costs through these steps.
