The Auburn University Advisory Journalism Council recently honored Gillis Morgan with the Distinguished Alabama Community Journalist Award. Morgan was among five journalists honored at the ceremony in Auburn on Sept. 9.
In his early career, Morgan worked as a young reporter covering the Civil Rights movement throughout Alabama. He works for the Alabama Journal in Montgomery and the Birmingham News.
After earning a master’s degree from the University of Alabama, he joined the Auburn journalism faculty where he taught for 22 years.
Others honored included:
• Ken Hare, former editorial page editor of the Montgomery Advertiser, Distinguished Mass Media Achievement
• Phillip Marshall, sports writer at The Huntsville Times, Distinguished Alabama Community Sports Journalist
• David Housel, former sports information director at Auburn, Distinguished AU Journalism Alumnus
• Rick Bragg, author and instructor at the University of Alabama, Roy Bain Distinguished Special Achievement in Journalism.
